What type of lens would take pictures like these: http://community.livejournal.c...

I only own the lens that the Canon Rebel comes with.

If you look closely, the tele shots are crops -- check out the crummy quality.

And for the lens to get the close-in shots, it has to be wide.

So it's an 18-135 or so.

Reply:Big time telephoto, like 300 or more on a digital camera or 400 or more on a film camera.

Note the image compression. That distant GMC truck is at least 60 feet away, but it looks like it's right over her shoulder.
Reply:probably a telephoto lens something like 75-300
Reply:Yes, Dr. Sam is correct.

Most of the shooters are using 400mm f/2.8 or 600mm f/4.0 lenses (the same as the sports photogs do).

Sell your Corvette or Harley and step up to the plate
Reply:They may be using a long telephoto, but some of the shots are obviously cropped. Looks like there were using either a high ISO as well. Although the questionable quality on the crops could be from too much compression(JPG artifacting), cropping too deep or high ISO noise.
Reply:The lens you have would do most of them, the rest were probably shot with a medium telephoto 70 - 200mm or so.

Reply:The EF18-55 will do some nice things but to reach out like this shooter has you need something with a good range. Judging from the flattening of the depth, I'd guess it's about 300mm but that's just a guess.

For some really good range and a great piece of glass for your Canon at a fantastic price - look at the EF70-200 f/4L. You can have one for less than $600 these days.
